A club from Gijón will earn at least one point in Granada

In Granada, two clubs will finish the football season, and they are among the most notable in the Spanish Segunda División. The local club bearing the same name has won the Segunda four times in its history, while its upcoming opponent has done so five times. Neither Granada nor Sporting de Gijón has any other trophies. Both clubs reached the current division after being relegated from La Liga. Granada played in the top flight as recently as 2024, but finished bottom there. The Sporting de Gijón club will complete its ninth season in the Segunda División. Their last foray into the elite was inglorious for Sporting. In their first season they barely survived relegation, finishing just above the relegation zone, and as early as 2017 they dropped to Segunda. Since then, Sporting has had more chances to be relegated to the third division than to reach La Liga. In both seasons in the Segunda División, Granada has been led by Pacheta, but the club's drop to fourteenth place in the standings will likely be evaluated by the club's management. That is why the hosts for the upcoming match seem to be finishing the season with little motivation, anticipating changes in the team's management and a rebuild of its squad. Such a state of affairs is not evident in Gijón. The visitors approach the Granada match in 12th place and are in improving form. Bookmakers have made the hosts the favorites for the upcoming clash, offering odds of 2.36 on their victory. For the last month and a half, Pacheta has not been able to bring Granada's players together. In the six previous rounds of the Segunda, the team suffered five defeats, managing to beat only the beleaguered Real Zaragoza. Granada has lost their last three matches, scoring only one goal. Playing in front of their own fans did not spur them to perform in the last two matches, which they lost to Burgos and Almería. Sporting leads Granada by ten points. Sporting's run of three straight defeats came to an end at the end of April — early May, but since mid-month they have beaten Zaragoza and Almería 3-1. In the first meeting between the two sides this season, Sporting won. It is unlikely that the visitors from Gijón will concede in the second leg either.
